Why do the addax live among the giraffes at Blank Park Zoo? It all has to do with their natural relationship. Animals like addax spend most of their day grazing on grasses, naturally trimming them down. Giraffes however eat from way up high and have a tendency to drop a lot of extra food in the process. Instead of bending all the way down to eat what they dropped they simply let shorter animals, like addax, clean up their mess 🌳🦒🍃🦌 | Blank Park Zoo

Giraffes provide a vital role in browsing on the tops of trees, though they can't hold on to everything that falls. This provides animals like the addax a chance to clean up what is dropped. Guests can see nature in action with the Africa yard that is home to giraffe and addax playing out these natural behaviors. | Blank Park Zoo

Training the giraffes is a TALL task! 🦒 Our large mammal team participates in weekly training sessions with the giraffe herd. To provide individualized care, each giraffe recognizes a unique shape and color as their station and voluntarily participates in a training session with a keeper. Our vet staff will often join a training session, to familiarize the giraffes with them and train for behaviors like voluntary blood draws and hoof maintenance! | Blank Park Zoo

#DYK both male and female reticulated giraffe have cartilage hardened into bone on their head? 🦒 Male giraffe, like Jakobi, use their impressive heads as clubs during combat, and their ossicones and calcium deposits concentrate the force of impact, to deliver heavier blows. Our zookeepers love placing boomer balls at Jakobi's height, to encourage species specific natural behaviors like headbutting! 🎥: Keeper Makaela | Blank Park Zoo

Earlier this week Bakari, the reticulated giraffe, set out on a big adventure to his new home! Bakari's move was rcommeneded by the reticulated giraffe Species Survival Plan (SPP) to join a new herd at another accredited facility. We could not be more proud of our Large Mammal animal care team as they made this process as stress free as they could for Bakari. We wish him safe travels and hope to share more once Bakari's new home announces his arrival 🦒 | Blank Park Zoo

What do giraffes and cows have in common? They're both ruminants! A ruminant animal is an animal that has multiple stomach chambers used for digesting food. Much like how Iowa farm cows chew their cud, giraffes do as well 🦒 | Blank Park Zoo
