The sports world is mourning the loss of NASCAR legend Greg Biffle, who was killed in a plane crash Thursday alongside his wife and two children, shortly after takeoff in North Carolina. The U.S. government has admitted its role in the deadliest plane crash on American soil in more than two decades. The crash resulted in 67 deaths that included a group of elite young figure skaters in addition to their parents and coaches who had just attended the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.
In a 209-page court filing, the U.S. government said it is among the defendants liable for the damages from the Jan. 29 plane crash.
Greg Biffle was the latest athlete to die in an aviation crash. There were several deaths involving planes and helicopters, including one earlier this year.
The government said the Army helicopter pilots failed to "maintain vigilance" to see and avoid the American Airlines jet before the crash.
